Understanding our emissions

Eco Park Building

Our environmental permits give us clear instructions on how to protect the environment and help maintain the delicate balance between human activity and environmental protection.

Like you, we want to make sure our neighbourhood and the natural environment remains safe for us and wildlife. That’s why we do everything in our power to make sure any impact is minimised.

What do we monitor?

All our activities are regulated and monitored by the Environment Agency. Our permits regulate our emissions to air, water and land.

These strict permits also regulate our emissions in three by-product categories: Air Pollution Control Residue (APCR), Ash resulting from the combustion (Bottom Ash), and wastewater treatment (Effluent Treatment Plant).

Air

The white haze you see coming from our chimney is water vapour from the steam we use to power the turbines and produce electricity.

Gases generated during the waste burning process are filtered and undergo a flue gas treatment process to remove any harmful chemical emissions before being released through the stack.

Water

We mainly use steam to power the turbines and produce electricity.

The water released to the sewers is monitored by tight parameters. Samples are taken quarterly and sent to an accredited lab for testing. The surface water emissions are also checked quarterly.

All this information is available from the Environment Agency.

Ash

The ash is what remains after the waste has been treated. Even then, we maximise any recycling potential by sending it to a dedicated facility.

The ash is monitored closely. Samples are taken twice a month and sent to an accredited lab for checking. The lab reports show whether the ash can be reused in the construction industry.

Our ash has been used to build the Eurotunnel, Heathrow Terminal 5, and many roads across the UK.

How do we monitor

The balance between human activity and preserving our natural environment is a delicate one that we are determined to maintain. That’s why we welcome the Environment Agency’s strict monitoring and reporting regime.

We undergo:

  • 24/7 monitoring
  • Continuous monthly emission reporting
  • Quarterly reporting and sampling of air and water emissions
  • Bi-annual gas emissions reports
  • Comprehensive annual reports

LondonEnergy uses robust and accepted methods to calculate its energy usage and associated Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.

Our GHG emissions are assessed under DEFRA’s Environmental reporting guidelines, including Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting Requirements using the 2020 emission conversion factors developed by DEFRA and BEIS. The results are disclosed in an annual report published under the Companies (Director’s Report) and Limited Liability Partnerships (Energy and Carbon Report) Regulations 2018.
